Capture cards

This thread is probably floating around somewhere else, but I thought, rather than drag it up and wade through a million replies to ask a question (and in a blatant attempt to get on Thousanth's "film-related posters" hitlist ), I'd start again.

I'm soon to be coming into possession of a computer system good enough to edit on (my own edit suite at last! YAY!) and, indeed, it has everything in it I need to start editing EXCEPT a capture card.

So...

Anybody got any particular recommendations?

Most of my stuff is analogue with the occasional foray into digital, should I just get an analogue card and later buy a separate Firewire card? Or should I get the whole shebang, all-in-one, super-duper jobbie now?

Can I do this for under ?300?

Is anyone still reading this?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Stick with dv and get your self a cheep and nasty card. Let the pc do the work. Get your cam dv in enabled and your ready to go.

Be sure if you are recording to and from S-VHS.

That the final copy is recorded for standard VHS (This is for NTSC 320x240).

I handed out a bunch of tapes as gifts, and everyone kept saying it was interesting.

They were watching 20 min of static because no one had a VCR that would convert to S-VHS.

On a similiar topic: a friend of mine said you can get a small device that can handle svhs, cable etc. that plugs into your firewire port for about $300 (anybody have a fuggin' monetary conversion chart?)

Is anyone familiar with these devices and can you recommend a good one?

If you can afford it I would go the all DV route, it's become far cheaper and more practical in the last 18 months

buy a PC that's as fast as you can afford (?800) that has either Win2K or XP (ugh!) prebundled

buy an OHCI compliant DV card (?60)

buy Premiere second hand (?200 perhaps)

buy a single chip DV camera (?400)

buy a 40GB hard disk (?90)

prices can go down as well as up ...

Tabletop tripod: ?2-3
Good Tabletop tripod: ?15
Spare battery: varies from camera to camera
Maudite: At least ?20 worth
DV tape: ?8 an hour (sp mode)without buying in bulk
After effects: If file sharing is legal in your area (and if you live in a place where you can buy it second hand I can't figure why not) check Morpheus. Same with Premiere.
